What is Compositing?

Check out this amazing video created by Roy Peker which explains what the art of compositing is all about.

What You will Learn

Every week will be focused on a certain topic so you can practice and build a really strong foundation before working on your final project.

Compositing

Compositing is art of combining all the visual elements into a single image. We will cover all the basic subjects that are required to create a strong composite.

Rotoscoping

Rotoscoping is the creation of mattes for elements on a live-action plate, preparing it to be composited over another background.

Rotopaint

Rotopaint is the process to remove unwanted artifacts and reconstruct the background. It is also used to digitally correct a render or composite and do beauty fixes on the actors.

Keying

Greenscreens (or bluescreens) are used to insert background elements into a live action shot. You can put the actors in an entirely different world by just extracting them from a scene using different keying techniques.

Camera Tracking

Camera tracking, or match moving, is a technique that allows the insertion of computer graphics into live-action footage with correct position, scale, orientation, and motion relative to the photographed objects in the shot.

CG Integration

Whether its Giant Robots or Massive Sea Monsters, Compositing is required to put these 3D elements into real-world footage to make them believable.

Week 1-4

The first four weeks will start with introduction and cover all the basics such as rotoscoping, rotopaint, keying, tracking, cg integration, color correction to form a very strong foundation and will have weekly assignments to put what we learn in practice.

Week 5-8

Once we complete the first month we will revisit each topic and get into advance learning and building up on what we have learned. We will learn each topic in depth and work on some challenging assignments to push our skills further and create some great work for demo reel.

Week 9-12

After completing two intense months of training, We will dive into doing some advanced exercises and focus on the final project to bring what we have learned together and create something stunning. You will spend more time with the instructor to polish up your skills and take your final project across the finish line.

Week 1

This week will be focused on getting comfortable with the course format. We will go over how to get Nuke and begin with a simple exercise to explore Nuke's interface and it's color grading tools and learn about different subjects that we will be learning over the weeks.

Week 2

This week will focus on getting started with Rotoscoping and Nuke's Rotopaint tools. These are important skills for becoming a Roto / Paint Artist or working in Stereo Composting. As a compositor you use these tools on everyday basis.

Week 3

This week we will learn about Keying and CG Integration. We will learn how to extract actors from bluescreen / greenscreen and put them in a different environment and how to integrate an 3D object into a scene.

Week 4

This week will focus on Camera Tracker, 2D Tracker and Planar Tracker and Nuke's great 3D Tools. We will learn about 3D Space and how to setup projections and use the tracking tools to remove / add objects to a scene.

Week 5

After completing all the basics we will dive into advance exercises and touch on rotoscoping and rotopaint on how to do approach challenging shots and work on some great shots to take our skills further.

Week 6

This week will be focused on Keying. We will go over different keyers, advance matte creation, advance despill operations and denoising methods to make our green screen / blue screen extraction stronger and revisit Nuke's tracking tools.

Week 7

We will dive into Nuke's 3D Tracker and learn how to track more challenging shots and do set extensions / camera projections by creating 3D geometry inside Nuke. We will also learn more about Lens distortion, camera's and how to use Nuke's amazing smart vector tool.

Week 8

Week eight will focus on CG Integration, understanding color correction and going over LUT's. We will learn on how to integrate CG objects into a scene and use Nuke's color grade tools to create some composites that look photoreal.

Week 9

This week will kick off with the final project, which will put everything together that we have learned so far. We will go over the project and approach it as a Studio would to set our milestones and overview the deadlines. We will also look at an advance assignment which will become part of our demo reel at the end.

Week 10

Week ten will be focused on meeting our milestones for the final project. There will be more 1-on-1 time with the teacher to get the project going and and there will be lectures to recap certain topics and we will touch on scripting and how to create a better workflow in Nuke.

This week will be laser focused on final project to push it towards the deadline and will consist of more mentoring time. We will revisit previous assignments to take them further and touch on topics that students want and learn about Nuke's warping / morphing tools.

Week 12

The final week will focus on taking a look at the portfolio / demo reel and in depth 1-on-1 critique. We will go over on how to get a job in the industry and presenting your work. Students will receive their final grades and will be awarded the certificate of completion.
